Lessons in Leadership & Lifting Others
By Amanda Ma
As a woman leader in the event industry, I’ve experienced firsthand how powerful it is when women support women. Throughout my career, I’ve learned that true leadership isn’t just about personal success—it’s about creating space for others to rise with you. I’m excited to share some of the lessons I’ve learned along the way in hopes that they help others on their journey.
Challenges & Growth Shape Us
Leadership comes with constant learning and growth. One of the biggest challenges I faced early on was learning to let go strategically. It wasn’t easy to take bigger risks or hand off responsibilities, but once I embraced that mindset, my agency grew exponentially.
Setting up a team-managed company was a game changer. I realized that when you trust your team and empower them to lead, the results speak for themselves.
Even now, with over 20 years in the industry, I continue to evolve. I’m always looking for ways to level up as a leader and develop new skills. There were so many things I didn’t know at the beginning, but I learned by doing—and I’m still learning every day.
Facing Fear & Moving Forward
One mindset that’s helped me tremendously is learning to take action even when fear is present. I love the quote: “Do it afraid.” That’s become a guiding principle for me.
Every time I stepped outside of my comfort zone, it led to a breakthrough—whether personally or professionally. Growth doesn’t happen in a bubble. It comes when we take the leap, stretch ourselves, and trust that we’ll figure it out.
Why People Come First
I always say: I’m in the people business—it just happens to be through the vehicle of events. When you lead with purpose and put people first, you build something far greater than a company. You build community, connection and impact.
At Innovate Marketing Group, we focus on creating experiences that change lives. It’s not just about logistics or visuals—it’s about the way people feel when they walk away from something we’ve created together.
My Advice to Women Entrepreneurs
If you’ve been thinking about starting your own business, my advice is simple: Just start. There will never be a perfect time, and you’ll never feel 100% ready. But you’ll learn by doing. Here are a few things I’ve learned along the way:
- Know your why: A strong purpose will keep you grounded.
- Build your network: Mentors and peers are invaluable.
- Be financially savvy: Understand your pricing and profitability.
- Stay resilient: Mistakes are part of the process.
- Prioritize self-care: “You cannot serve from an empty vessel.” – Eleanor Brownn.
- Own your confidence: Take risks, speak up and trust your instincts.
The world needs more women-led businesses. There is room for you at the table—go for it!
Lifting As We Climb
I deeply believe in the philosophy of lifting as we climb. As women leaders, we have the opportunity to uplift others and create real change. Here are some ways we can help each other grow:
- Mentor & sponsor others: Speak up for women when they’re not in the room.
- Collaborate instead of competing: There’s power in partnerships.
- Create opportunities: Hire, refer and invest in other women.
- Share your knowledge: Be generous with your lessons learned.
- Encourage confidence: Sometimes, someone just needs a little push.
When women support women, we all rise. Let’s create more seats at the table—and open the doors even wider for the next generation of leaders.
