The Greater Los Angeles African American Chamber of Commerce (GLAAACC) will celebrate three decades of excellence and impact at its 32nd Economic Awards, taking place Friday, April 17, at the JW Marriott L.A. LIVE. The annual black-tie gala is widely regarded as one of Southern California’s premier business events, bringing together influential leaders, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and community champions committed to advancing economic equity and opportunity.
For 32 years, GLAAACC has recognized individuals, corporations, and small businesses whose work strengthens the African American business ecosystem and contributes to the region’s economic vitality. The Economic Awards have evolved into a signature convening that not only honors achievement but also fosters strategic partnerships and investment across industries.
“GLAAACC’s Economic Awards Dinner is the top business event of the year,” GLAAACC Chairman Gene Hale said. “It provides unrivaled opportunities to network and hear directly from business leaders and our elected representatives and that’s particularly important these days.”
The significance of the awards is underscored by the growing influence of Black-owned businesses in the U.S. economy. According to recent national data, there are more than 3 million Black-owned businesses in the United States, generating over $200 billion in annual revenue and supporting millions of jobs. Small businesses overall account for roughly 44% of U.S. economic activity, and Black entrepreneurs represent one of the fastest-growing segments within that sector.
Despite persistent barriers to capital and market access, Black-owned firms continue to expand, innovate, and create pathways to generational wealth. In major metropolitan regions like Los Angeles, these businesses play a critical role in neighborhood revitalization, workforce development, and supply-chain diversity. GLAAACC’s mission has long centered on amplifying these contributions while advocating for policies that create equitable opportunities for growth.

Over the years, the Economic Awards have drawn an impressive roster of honorees and keynote speakers representing the highest levels of business and public service. A partial list of past participants includes California Governor Gavin Newsom, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson, and Inglewood Mayor James Butts.
Other notable figures who have taken the stage include Los Angeles County Supervisors Kathryn Barger, Holly Mitchell, Hilda Solis, and Janice Hahn; California State Controller Malia Cohen; and U.S. Congressmember Maxine Waters. The event has also welcomed private-sector leaders such as Clint Odom of T-Mobile, Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer, JPMorgan Chase Managing Director Diedra Porche and LA Metro CEO Stephanie Wiggins.
Their participation reflects the broad coalition of leaders committed to strengthening inclusive economic growth and expanding access to opportunity across the region.
Serving as mistress of ceremonies for the 32nd Economic Awards is Michelle Fisher, co-anchor at KABC-TV (ABC7 Los Angeles). Fisher joined the station in November 2022 following roles at the Black News Channel and NBC News, where she anchored the digital program The Report by NBC News on Quibi. Earlier in her career, she worked at WBZ-TV in Boston and began her broadcasting journey as a morning anchor in Monroe, Louisiana.
Her presence underscores the event’s blend of professionalism, storytelling, and celebration as attendees gather to honor excellence while reflecting on the progress and possibilities ahead.
Beyond recognition, the Economic Awards serve as a catalyst for collaboration. Each year, the gala convenes leaders from finance, technology, entertainment, government, and nonprofit sectors, creating space for dialogue around investment, procurement opportunities, and strategies to close wealth gaps. The event also highlights emerging entrepreneurs whose innovations are shaping the future of Los Angeles’ economy.
