In a craft beer industry traditionally dominated by men, Christina Thomas and Julian Hill are rewriting the narrative with Brown Girl’s Brew. A brand born from the fusion of family heritage, audacity, and relentless creativity, Brown Girl’s Brew is more than just a craft beer brand; it’s a celebration of community and empowerment.
The seeds of Brown Girl’s Brew were planted in 2010 when Thomas, amid a thriving banking career, envisioned a groundbreaking craft beer brand inspired by her mother’s cherished dessert recipes. Growing up on Chicago’s South Side, Thomas watched her mother, Allie, transform flour, sugar, and love into magical cakes that filled their bakery with warmth and joy. When the family relocated to Phoenix, Arizona, in 1989, those sweet memories stayed with Thomas, sparking the idea of blending dessert flavors into beer.
“My mother’s creativity and passion taught me to dream big,” Thomas shares. “Brown Girl’s Brew is an extension of that legacy, a way to honor her while creating something uniquely our own.”
The journey wasn’t without challenges. Entering an industry that often resists change, Thomas faced hurdles in gaining recognition and securing distribution. Yet, with the steadfast support of her partner and co-founder, Hill, Brown Girl’s Brew began to flourish. Together, they redefined what a craft beer brand could be—a symbol of resilience, innovation, and community.
The beers themselves tell the story. From the award-winning Carrot Cake Amber Ale to the Banana Pudding Hefeweizen, every sip rekindles cherished memories while crafting new ones. Other standout creations include the Lemon Pound Cake Lager, Key Lime Pie Ale, and the decadent German Chocolate Stout. Each brew pays homage to Allie’s bakery roots, blending the warmth of homemade desserts with the refreshing allure of craft beer.
But Brown Girl’s Brew is about more than just flavor; it’s about community. Thomas and Hill have built their craft beer brand as a platform to foster community and inspire others to break barriers. Through partnerships, local events, and their commitment to representation in every facet of their business, they continue to challenge norms and redefine beer culture.
“We wanted to create something that wasn’t just for beer enthusiasts but for everyone,” Hill explains. “Brown Girl’s Brew is about building bridges and sharing stories over a pint.”
Today, Brown Girl’s Brew stands as a testament to perseverance and vision. Available in select Total Wine & More locations in New Jersey, the brand continues to grow. Recently, Thomas and Hill expanded into coffee and tea with a soft launch online, further demonstrating their innovative spirit.
For Thomas, Brown Girl’s Brew isn’t just a business; it’s a movement. “It’s about breaking stereotypes, pushing boundaries, and showing the world that women of color belong in every industry,” she says.
Brown Girl’s Brew is a toast to bold dreams, an enduring legacy, and a brighter future. Cheers to Thomas’s unyielding spirit and Allie’s everlasting inspiration—proof that when passion meets purpose, there are no limits.
